Understanding Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that fit over your teeth to create a new front surface. While veneers come in a variety of materials, our practice uses porcelain because it is resistant to stains and has light-reflecting properties similar to your own teeth. This creates more lasting results and a natural appearance.

Dr. Solow can use porcelain veneers to improve a variety of cosmetic concerns for Woodland Hills and Calabasas patients, including:

  • Irregular surfaces. Teeth may have pitting or cratering that can detract from the aesthetics of a smile.
  • Chipping and wear. Teeth can become damaged over time or due to sudden trauma.
  • Discoloration. Several factors, such as certain prescription drugs, can change the color or shade of teeth.

You may be a good candidate for the porcelain veneers if your concerns are mainly cosmetic and occur on the front surface of the teeth. Dr. Solow offers other solutions for teeth that have more severe damage.

Dr. Solow’s Approach to Porcelain Veneers

Patients start with a visit to our Woodland Hills and Calabasas practice. Because there are several treatments for aesthetic dental issues, a comprehensive examination, which may include X-rays, will help Dr. Solow determine which approach suits your needs best.

Porcelain veneers can provide great-looking results, but there are some factors you should consider before treatment. Placing the veneers means removing a portion of the enamel from the front of your teeth, which is not reversible. Also, the treatment is only intended for strong and healthy teeth with minimal cosmetic concerns. Finally, porcelain veneers may need to be replaced within a decade.

Despite these considerations, veneers often present the best choice, balancing cost, effectiveness, and speed of improvement. Dr. Solow will take the time to answer any questions you have about treatment and to recommend a solution based on your needs.

How Porcelain Veneers Are Placed

Before your procedure, you and Dr. Solow will discuss whether you prefer traditional porcelain veneers or a same day approach:

  • Traditional porcelain veneers take several weeks to fabricate but this allows our in-house laboratory technician the time to customize veneers to the color and shape of your teeth.
  • The same day procedure places porcelain veneers in a single dental visit. This approach is very technique sensitive and is not applicable to all situations.  Dr. Solow will advise as to the best method for each case.

Each of these procedures for porcelain veneers takes place at our practice in the Woodland Hills and Calabasas area. Dr. Solow will numb the areas of treatment so that you don’t feel discomfort, and then he will reduce the front surface of the teeth to create space for the veneers.

Using the traditional approach, Dr. Solow will make forms from your teeth, and our dental technician will use them to fabricate the porcelain veneers. You will return to our practice when these are completed. Dr. Solow will examine the fit and color, make adjustments, and then cement the veneers into place.

Same day porcelain veneers work much the same, except that the CEREC system will create your porcelain veneers during the first appointment, and you will leave our practice with a completed restoration. With either approach, Woodland Hills and Calabasas patients can expect personal and expert care at every step in your experience.
